Clearing Energy Blocks

Energy blocks are invisible barriers affecting the flow of energy in our energy body. They can cause pain, suffering, or other physical and mental challenges. Over time, these blockages can leave us feeling stuck, exhausted, or out of sync with ourselves, and can cause energetic depletion in other areas that negatively affect our wellbeing.

Recognizing and clearing these energy blocks while being kind to your body and your energy is important for improving our overall balance and vitality. In this post, we’ll explore what energy blocks are, how they impact us, and practical ways to release them so your body and spirit can feel lighter, stronger, and more balanced.

Understanding Energy Blocks

Just as your body has blood vessels to circulate blood, our energy body has channels to circulate life force. Life force is what keeps us alive and, at its best, supports our overall health.

When we experience suffering, pain, or other physical or mental challenges, energetically one of two things is happening. Either we are lacking life force, meaning the cells, organs, or a particular part of the body or mind is depleted to the point where it simply does not have the energy it needs to heal or maintain health. Or we are congested, which causes a similar effect but means there is too much energy in one spot, creating what we call an energetic ‘block’ in that area. Think of it like clogged pipes in the kitchen or bathroom. The water still gets through but only a trickle. It is the same with our life force; small amounts still get through but not enough to heal or maintain good health.

Sometimes both depletion and congestion happen at the same time. For example, with heart ailments, one area of the heart may be congested while another is depleted. Energetic blocks in one area can create depletion in another, which is why understanding and clearing these blocks is so important for restoring balance and overall vitality.

Signs and symptoms of energetic blocks

Signs and symptoms of having energetic blocks can include health issues, chronic fatigue, pain in the body, tension or stiffness, headaches or migraines, digestive problems, trouble sleeping, emotional imbalances like anxiety or irritability, difficulty focusing, and feeling stuck or unmotivated in life and more.

How do energy blocks form?

So how do energetic blocks form in the first place? There are many reasons why the energy channels can become blocked. Factors such as lack of exercise, prolonged sitting, too much spiritual work or meditation, and certain emotions can all contribute to congestion in the energy system. Let’s break it down.

Anger and other emotions

One of the fastest emotions to clog our energy channels is anger. I am not the type of healer who only focuses on “light and love.” Anger has an important role in our lives and can be a powerful teacher if we pay attention to it and process it properly. The problem comes when we do not take the time to work through our anger and understand what it is trying to tell us. When that happens, it can get stuck and block the flow of life force.

Energetically, anger is very sticky, so it tends to linger in the body until it is released. Over time, prolonged anger or stress can leave the body more vulnerable to illness, like colds or the flu, because life force is not moving freely and the immune system becomes compromised. This is just one example. Grief, chronic stress, and other intense emotions can create similar energetic blockages that affect our overall health.

Lack of exercise

For those of you who love to meditate but don’t like exercising, I’m sorry for what I’m about to say. Regular meditation without exercise clogs the energy channels. I’m not talking about the 10-minute meditation class on Peloton. I mean the kind of meditation where you are drawing down energy or sitting in prolonged awareness for an extended period—practices that engage powerful spiritual energy. This kind of meditation is drawing in a lot of energy into the energy body, which like why wouldn’t that be a good thing? Your energy body can only handle so much, it gets to a point where it's ‘full’. The rest of the energy that it can’t absorb sits in the aura and eventually disperses as you go through your day.  This can also cause energetic blockages. Say for example you already have some congested energy around your eyes, this is common when the eyes are fatigued or you’ve been using your eyes a lot. With repetitive meditation and no movement when the energy from your meditations can cause what was just a little congestion around the eyes to snowball, making things worse which then can cause a headache.

I’ve seen advanced meditation practitioners come in experiencing a lot of pain because they spend long hours meditating but do not get enough exercise.

Prolonged sitting

Prolonged sitting is another common cause of energetic congestion. As someone who sits a lot, this is something I am very aware of. Sitting for long periods can create stagnant energy in the lower part of the body, especially around the lower back and kidneys.

Overdoing it with healing work

Too much healing! (Says the Energy Healer.) Sometimes people overdo it with healing work. The cells of the body need time to absorb the energetic changes that have been made. If you work with me, I generally advise giving yourself 24 to 48 hours, then checking in with yourself to see how you feel. Some issues are acute and may need faster attention, but most do not.

Generally, it is not a good idea to work with one healer one day and another the very next. Even if the modalities or practitioners are slightly different, there is a good chance you are still processing the first session. Adding more energy into your system too quickly can create congestion or energetic blocks. If a client is working with another reader, healer, or wellness practitioner, I usually suggest leaving at least a day or two between sessions. If you really want to see practitioners back-to-back, check in with each one to see how they recommend proceeding.

Some modalities can be complementary and support the release that often happens after a session. Massage and acupuncture, for example, can be helpful following a healing session. In general, it is best to err on the side of less is more.

How to clear energy blocks

My number one recommendation for helping to clear energetic blocks is exercise. Okay Peloton, here’s where you shine. That said, you do not have to do intense workouts. Just moving your body a little bit can be incredibly helpful.

If you meditate, it is important to move your body from head to toe both before and after your session. This does two things. First, moving beforehand acts as a preventative measure. It helps break up any energetic blockages in the energy channels and chakras, which can improve the quality of your meditation and allow your life force to flow more freely. Second, doing some movement afterwards helps your body absorb the energy you brought in during meditation. It continues to clear blockages and supports your organs and cells in taking in that energy. Hello longevity.

If you do not meditate but spend a lot of time sitting, or if you are working through emotional challenges, exercise is just as powerful for you. I want to break this down a little more to really drive the point home.

Lift your chin so your head tilts back, leaving your throat exposed. Now gently bring your chin down toward your sternum, as far as you can without straining your neck. Repeat this movement a few times. Each time you do it, you are supporting your Throat Chakra. When your head tilts back, life force is released from the chakra. When your head tilts forward, the chakra draws in fresh life force from your environment. Even after just a few repetitions, your Throat Chakra becomes a little cleaner and a little healthier. In that moment, you have given yourself healing.

This simple exercise is especially helpful for anyone who struggles with self-expression, clenches their jaw, or needs to improve blood and oxygen flow through the head.

Now think of something like yoga. Every time you bend and stretch a part of your body, the same process happens. You are helping your body release blockages and stagnant energy in that area while also drawing in fresh life force. Let your imagination run with this idea as you move. Pay attention to the part of your body that is bending, stretching, or opening, and know that with each movement, you are offering your body healing.

Do what movement you can. Honor where your body is at and work with what you have. Small movements really do add up. And of course, if you want an extra boost, that’s where I come in. My remote energy healing sessions are designed to clear out those stubborn energetic blocks so your body and spirit can feel lighter, stronger, and more balanced.

Until next time, be kind to your body and your energy.
