Signs of an Underactive Root Chakra (And Simple Ways to Feel Grounded Again)

The Root Chakra, also known as the First Chakra, Base Chakra, Basic Chakra, or Muladhara Chakra, is the foundation of our energy system. It is associated with our sense of safety, security, stability, and belonging, and is closely tied to our basic survival needs. When this chakra is balanced, it helps us feel grounded, deeply connected, and supported in our lives.

In this article, we'll explore the signs of an underactive Root Chakra, what can contribute to this imbalance, and simple grounding practices, including grounding meditation, to help restore balance.

Whether you're new to chakra work or have been on this path for a while, this post is for you if you've been desiring more stability, safety, or grounding in your life.

What is the Root Chakra?

The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. Physically, it oversees the strength of the body, supporting the health and flexibility of the spine, bone marrow, blood, joints, and tissues. It strengthens the legs and helps us feel rooted and stable. On a psychological level, it gives us a sense of safety, security, and belonging. It helps us feel grounded and connected to our lives and the world around us. Energetically, it supports vitality and the body's natural ability to heal and restore itself.

As the first of the major chakras, the Root Chakra's role is to anchor us in our body and in the physical world.

When it comes to our thoughts and beliefs, the Root Chakra can influence how we view money, work, home, and our sense of security. It can also be connected to what some people call "poverty consciousness" or a scarcity mindset. These thoughts, belief systems, and ideas can accumulate within the Root Chakra, creating energetic patterns that influence how we experience safety, security, and stability in our lives.

I think more than ever, with the constant stream of news and information we're exposed to, it can be easy to fall into constant worry and lose our sense of safety in the world, especially if the Root Chakra is already weak or underactive. When we are continually surrounded by information that reinforces fear, uncertainty, and instability, the Root Chakra can begin to "wobble," disrupting energy flow and fluctuating in size, becoming less stable. It's almost like creating an echo chamber for the Root Chakra. The more we focus on what feels unsafe, the more those feelings are amplified. Over time, this can become a cycle where our sense of grounding and security diminishes, affecting our mental well being and making it easier for those same thoughts and emotions to continue reinforcing the imbalance.

Signs of an Underactive Root Chakra

Here are some common physical, mental and emotional signs your root chakra may be underactive:

  • Fatigue, low energy, and ongoing physical weakness

  • Feeling like your body is slow to heal or restore balance

  • Feelings of lack, scarcity, or never having enough

  • Depression or a persistent heaviness

  • Lack of motivation or difficulty taking action

  • Difficulty getting things done, procrastination, or feeling blocked

  • Difficulty following through on things

  • Difficulty committing to decisions, relationships, or life changes

  • Struggling to make your dreams and goals a reality

  • Constantly feeling unsafe, uncertain, or unsupported

  • Difficulty keeping a job or creating stability in your career

  • Feeling like you never truly belong or that you don’t have a place to call home

  • Challenges with money and financial security

  • Frequently losing or misplacing things, feeling scattered, or being accident-prone

Common Causes of an Underactive Root Chakra

Emotional Trauma

The first thing that comes to mind is trauma. While there are many different causes of an underactive Root Chakra, emotional trauma is a significant one, and it is something many people experience. When we go through traumatic experiences, especially ongoing trauma, the Root Chakra can begin to "check out" as a way of protecting us.

For example, if someone grows up in an unsafe home environment or experiences an abusive relationship, dissociation can become a learned coping mechanism. The Root Chakra may become smaller, creating a sense of disconnection from the body or a feeling of not being fully present within ourselves.

This is not a good or bad response. It is a survival response rooted in our survival instincts and a way the body and energy system attempt to protect us from overwhelming experiences, fear, or ongoing danger.

Because the Root Chakra is associated with our sense of safety, security, and stability, it is energetically connected with the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps the body enter states of rest, calm, and regulation. When we experience trauma, it can impact how safe we feel in our bodies and how we move through the world, not just on a physiological level, but energetically as well.

Spiritual Inclination

Another reason the Root Chakra may become underactive is because some people are naturally more spiritually inclined, while others are more naturally connected to the physical aspects of life. We’re all born with our own strengths and, let's just say, areas where we have room to grow.

Some people naturally have stronger upper chakra energy, energy that's more connected to the crown chakra and other upper energy centers, which can make them more drawn to meditation, spirituality, creativity, and deeper spiritual development. However, when there is a lot of energy in the upper chakras and not enough grounding energy in the lower chakras, it can create a feeling of being ungrounded, disconnected from the body, or less connected to the practical aspects of everyday life. In its more extreme forms, this can make it difficult to stay fully present, hold a job, have financial stability and be engaged with the physical world.

In addition, people who meditate a lot or spend a lot of time in spiritual practices, but do not balance this with movement, exercise, or regular grounding practices, can sometimes develop what I like to call "top-heavy" energy, where there is a lot of activity in the upper chakras but not enough energy in the lower chakras. If this sounds familiar, it may be worth exploring whether you're dealing with an overactive Crown Chakra as well.

Everyday Patterns and Habits

Lastly, all of us have certain patterns, habits, and areas where we are still growing. That is simply part of being human. These patterns can also show up energetically within all the chakras. We can think of them like seeds that are planted within our energy system. When they are continually reinforced, they can grow into larger patterns that influence how we think, feel, and move through life.

Energetic seeds of procrastination, avoidance, self-sabotage, and other limiting patterns can take root in the Root Chakra, affecting our ability to feel grounded, take action, and create stability in our lives.

Root Chakra Healing and Grounding Practices

Connect Through Exercise and Movement

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, I probably sound like a broken record here, but exercise is one of the simplest ways to strengthen the Root Chakra. I won’t go into the impact exercise has on the entire energy body, but when it comes to the Root Chakra, it is one of the most effective ways to get grounded.

As we walk, run, lift weights, or move our bodies, this chakra naturally begins to release stagnant energy. This can include old belief systems, limiting ideas, negative thought patterns, and stuck emotional energy. It won’t resolve everything overnight, but it can make a significant difference.

As this energy becomes dislodged, fresh life force energy can naturally flow in, strengthening the chakra. This not only increases the energy available within the chakra but can also expand its size. In turn, this can support greater physical energy, a stronger sense of grounding, and shifts in the way we think about money, our bodies, our lives, and our sense of security.

While going for a walk here and there is beneficial, try to make movement, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle a regular part of your life. The Root Chakra thrives on consistency, stability, and connection to the physical body.

Grounding Exercise

This is a very simple exercise to do, and it only takes a few minutes or less. If you meditate then you would want to do this at the very end of your meditation or spiritual practice. If you’re showing any signs of an underactive Root Chakra then you want to do this regularly, ideally a few times a week or more.

Here’s a quick way to ground. Ideally this is best done in the mornings or when the sun is up.

  1. Bring your awareness to the base of your spine.

  2. Say out loud ‘I send my grounding cord down into the Earth 3 meters, or 10 feet. I am super connected, super rooted to Mother Earth’.

  3. Spend a few moments in this space.

This practice brings up energy from the Earth. This is the type of  energy your Root Chakra needs. Grounding will bring up an abundance of earth energy which will help to strengthen and develop the lower chakras.

Connect With Nature

Other grounding practices include forest bathing, spending time with trees, walking barefoot on grass or sand, and simply allowing yourself to connect with nature.

When to Consider Additional Support

All of these suggestions are wonderful ways to strengthen the Root Chakra. However, sometimes we need to couple these practices with deeper healing and support as well. Energy Healing can be a powerful way to clear belief systems, patterns, programs, emotions, and energetic imbalances that are no longer serving us.

It's important to keep in mind that when someone is experiencing any of the issues I've mentioned, it may not only be the Root Chakra that is affected. More often than not, other energy centers throughout the entire chakra system need attention as well. The energy body is a complex and interconnected system, so while thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and experiences can accumulate within the Root Chakra, they can also be found throughout the aura and other chakras.

Healing often involves looking at the bigger picture and understanding what is creating imbalance within the entire chakra system — not just one chakra in isolation. But we also need to do our homework and give that Root Chakra some exercise!

After all, the Root Chakra is strengthened through action, movement, and our willingness to reconnect with ourselves. Sometimes grounding practices are enough to help us reconnect and restore balance. Other times, we need deeper support to understand the energetic patterns we are carrying.
