Overactive Solar Plexus Chakra
Having an overactive Solar Plexus Chakra can feel like being on an emotional roller coaster.
When this chakra holds too much energy, emotions can swing dramatically or feel all-consuming. Either way you put it, the suffering that comes with this solar plexus chakra imbalance is awful.
Knowing the signs of an overactive Solar Plexus Chakra, what triggers it, and simple healing practices can restore balance to your energy body. Follow along in this post as we dive deeper—I hope these insights feel helpful for you.
Understanding the Solar Plexus Chakra
The Solar Plexus Chakra located in the upper abdomen just below the rib cage, governs our personal power, boundaries, ambition, and our ability to take care of ourselves.
The word ‘lower’ includes emotions such as anxiety, fear, stress, anger, frustration, etc. While the word lower might indicate that these emotional energies are ‘bad’, it simply describes the frequency of energy that these emotions produce in the mind and body. It’s a little heavier - and a little bit denser.
I think sometimes when we hear words like ‘lower’ and ‘denser’ we automatically assume this is something we should steer clear of, or that these are negative feelings, when that’s not really the case. These emotions are part of being human and I believe they are powerful teachers. When they can become a problem is when emotional energy gets stuck in the energy body and starts to snowball. As that stuck emotional energy accumulates, the solar plexus chakra can get really big.
As I’ve talked about in a previous post, whatever chakra is the largest on the energy body will dominate the mind, speech and actions.
Unfortunately this energetic state of having an overactive solar plexus chakra tends to have a domino effect on all the other major chakras.
For one, the Heart Chakra tends to close down, which can cause us to lack inner peace (hence the rollercoaster ride). In addition, because the life force is not flowing through the diaphragm, the upper and lower parts of the body cease to get the energy they need to stay healthy and functioning well. With time, consistently having an overactive solar plexus can weaken the health of the physical body. From an energetic perspective, many physical ailments come back to the solar plexus being off balance.
Signs a Solar Plexus Chakra may be overactive
An Overactive solar plexus chakra can have negative effects on your mental, emotional, and physical health.
Emotional symptoms
Frequent lower emotions: often this state is constant or recurs regularly. This can feel like the emotions are intense or all-consuming, showing up as irritability, anxiety, or being overly critical when your sense of control or self-worth feels off.
A need to control: this is related to the lower emotions, but worth mentioning. It can create a sense of needing too much control over your environment, other people, or situations.
Feeling reactive: an overactive Solar Plexus can cause reactivity to other people or situations. Often there is a lack of patience, and tempers can be short. People can go from 0-60 pretty quick.
Difficulty relaxing: because the Heart Chakra is on a bit of a vacation at this time, it can be hard to relax and find inner calm. Not impossible though, if you have some tools under your belt.
Repetitive negative thoughts: stuck emotional energy can cause the mind to loop on negative thoughts or fixate on a particular issue.
Physical symptoms
Sleeping issues: an overactive solar plexus can be one of the causes of insomnia, or waking up a lot.
Tightness in the diaphragm or trouble breathing: because it’s stuck energy causing the Solar Plexus to be overactive (and the Solar Plexus is located where the diaphragm is), this can lead to shallow breathing or a tight, constricted feeling in the chest or diaphragm.
Impact on health: over time, this overactive chakra can lead to health issues. It can have a weakening effect on the body, and the ‘negative’ energy may begin to travel to different areas, contributing to pain, discomfort, or imbalance.
What causes an Overactive Solar Plexus Chakra?
These emotions are part of our human experience: so the question really is why do they get stuck in our energy body in the first place?
Not processing emotions
The emotional energy tends to get stuck for a few reasons. One cause can be when we haven’t processed the emotions and experiences we’re having, and sometimes life is just happening so fast we don’t always have time to process everything. But when this is recurring, when we don’t take time to process, or work through the unfortunate things that happen to us that energy can get stuck in this chakra, and overtime it can really start to build up.
Negative environments or being around negative people
Another cause is being in negative environments or around negative people on a regular basis. This kind of depends on a few factors, the person, the degree of negativity, how long it's been going on for etc, but sometimes being around negativity and conflict regularly can really affect a person in this way. Whether they’re directly part of the conflict or not.
Not setting healthy boundaries
The Solar Plexus is also a center of healthy boundaries, the ability to take care of ourselves properly. You can think of it as the center of ‘my needs’ and ‘my wants’. Different from the Heart Chakra which helps us to think about our partners, family and friends. Solar is really about the self, and not in a bad way. It helps us have healthy self-interest and take care of ourselves properly. The lack of these healthy qualities can also lead to an overactive Solar Plexus.
Tips to calm your Solar Plexus Chakra
It’s in our best interest to try and keep our solar plexus chakra in good standing, not only for our mental health, but for the health of our physical bodies, for our quality of sleep, and really, for the quality of life we’re having.
Here are a few healing practices and suggestions to help regulate your Solar Plexus Chakra and bring balance:
Exercise
Any kind of exercise that gets the blood flowing is always good, as so much stuck stagnant energy leaves when we exert ourselves with exercise. Needless to say, I’m a big fan. For our goals here, the solar plexus chakra benefits from any kind of twisting exercise. Torso twists, yoga poses that twist the abdomen and diaphragm area and more. If that area is moving in any way, you can bet the solar plexus is releasing.
Salt Bowl Under the Bed
Using a salt bowl under the bed is so good for the solar plexus chakra. You can download the Salt Bowl PDF here. Please just make sure no animals or children get into the salt bowl.
Sit down, make yourself a cup of tea
At the start of this article, I wrote about how these lower emotions can be wonderful teachers, and I absolutely believe that to be true. The trick is creating the time and space to sit with them. This is a powerful and simple tool.
We’ve got to turn off the phone, the devices, the notifications. It’s just you, your favourite cuppa, and the silence and space to sit and be.
This might take some courage, but sit, breathe deeply, and allow the emotions to be felt. Scream, cry, do what you need to do, but feel them. Allow yourself to breathe through them so they can move and release from your body.
With that release, with that movement, they will often show you why they were there in the first place, what needs to change, what needs to improve, or what needs to shift. In that way, you’re not just releasing these stuck emotions, you’re allowing them to teach you what is needed for deeper healing.
Energy Healing Work
Receiving Psychological Healing is an effective way to regulate the solar plexus chakra and restore balance. In an energy healing session we are able to normalize the solar plexus chakra and get into the ‘why’ to heal any negative programming. This can be useful if there are recurring patterns or issues triggering this.
Working towards a balanced Solar Plexus Chakra
At the end of the day, having an overactive Solar Plexus Chakra isn’t something that needs to be feared or pushed away. It’s a sign that there’s emotional energy asking to be seen, felt, and worked through. Something isn’t right, and the chakra is responding to that.
With a bit of awareness, some space, and the right support, that energy can begin to move. And as it does, the Solar Plexus can come back into balance, allowing for more steadiness, clarity, and a greater sense of ease in both the mind and body.
Years ago, a teacher of mine said, “the Solar Plexus Chakra is the chakra that needs the most healing for people.” That was probably 20 years ago, and in our current day and age, I believe that to be true more than ever. A lot is going on in our lives, and a lot is going on in the world. This in itself can be overwhelming for this area.
So know that you don’t have to feel this way, and that support is here if you need it.
